UK consumers wish to see VAT axed from energy bills, study shows

Between 1 July 2019 and 31 December 2019, at least 10% of people who switched energy supplier for both gas & electricity with Uswitch saved £479 or more.

A recent study, conducted by, has found that the majority of UK consumers would like to see VAT axed on their household gas and electricity bills, according to an article published by

A massive 98 per cent of those surveyed stated that they thought the government should scrap the tax - offering VAT-free gas and electricity, as it has been for water bills.

It has been forecast that if VAT was to be scrapped, around 250,000 homes could be taken out of a state of fuel poverty - although gas and electricity prices wouldn't be affected, these measures could save an average consumer around £60 per year, according to uSwitch.

uSwitch, however, has warned that even if the government wanted to make such a change, EU agreements could prevent them from doing so.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch, stated: "If the Government wants to give householders respite from the high cost of energy it will have a battle on its hand."
