Incumbent suppliers

Since the 1990’s when electricity was privatised, the UK has been split into 14 energy regions. Each region has an incumbent gas supplier and an incumbent electricity supplier. These incumbent suppliers are effectively the default energy suppliers for each region.

British Gas are the incumbent gas supplier for the whole of the UK.

The South East area is made up of three different energy regions, and as such, there are three different incumbent electricity suppliers.

Southern (e.g. Oxford, Southampton, Portsmouth) - SSE Eastern (e.g. Milton Keynes) – E.ON Seeboard (e.g. Brighton) - EDF

If you have never switched your gas or electricity then there is a good chance you are with the incumbent suppliers for your region and also on their ‘standard’ tariff - which is generally their most expensive tariff.
