Britons may be wise to compare electricity prices online and, if necessary, make a switch to a new supplier in order to keep heating costs at a minimum during the current cold snap.

According to the Daily Telegraph, forecasters are predicting a thaw this weekend followed by a second big freeze next weekend.

"The respite will only be temporary as north easterly winds next week will send temperatures falling once again," says the Met Office's John Hammond.

In particular, parts of Scotland might struggle to see off the last wave of snow and ice before the next arrives, the newspaper predicts.

With this in mind, many people may be confident they will have to use a significant amount of fuel in the weeks ahead, so comparing electricity now may pay off in the long run.

Earlier this week, hundreds of motorists were left stranded on roads north of the border overnight, while pupils at a school in Hamilton were forced to sleep in their classrooms.
