Investing in domestic energy efficiency measures could be used alongside comparing electricity and gas prices online, it has been claimed.

The environmental advice centre Act on Energy claims consumers can save up to £600 a year by installing the latest energy efficiency technologies.

David Jullien, chief executive of Act on Energy, said that people should look to the future and consider the benefits of energy efficiency in the long term.

He said that while an energy-efficient light bulb may cost £10 it will pay for itself in three months and will provide cost benefits for the next eight years.

Mr Jullien added: "Until lately, saving energy has been seen as the preserve of the do-gooding brigade.

"But [it is] a sensible way to stop throwing money down the drain."

According to Birmingham letting agency Accord's Carl Mimmack, there has never been a better time for consumers to consider improving the energy efficiency of their property.
