Worrying about their financial predicament is now the top worry for people in the UK, according to new research.

A study by AXA has found that 53 per cent of Brits worry about their financial situation, which is over three-times more than the next social issue concerning people.

The second most worrying thing was gun and knife crime, which got 16 per cent of the vote, followed by immigration with 15 per cent.

Financial worries were up 21 per cent from 12 months ago, where as terrorism, which topped the 2007 rankings with 23 per cent, was down to only three per cent this time around.

Steve Folkard from AXA said financial concerns "can easily monopolise every waking thought".

He added: "Money worries have spread like a fever across the nation, with people increasingly concerned with their ability to meet financial commitments."

Insurance provider esure recently warned homeowners to ensure their property is secure, as there is a "clear increase" in the number of thefts over the Christmas period.
