Drivers in the UK spend a total of £2.4 billion on car park prangs every year, according to new research by RAC Direct Insurance.

The study found that motorists pay an average of £293.57 when spending their money on repairs after having their cars damaged in a car park, while one in ten drivers have admitted to driving off after hitting someone else's car.

It is also claimed that the worst area of the UK for car park damage is the north-east of England, while motorists in the south-west of the country have the least problems.

Commenting on the survey, RAC Direct Insurance's Rob Wilson said: "Often regarded as minor accidents, this study shows that the financial impact of car park bumps and scrapes is incredibly damaging."

"Park in quiet spots away from other vehicles, steer clear of tight spaces and empty trolleys which can roll into your car."

The study by RAC has been released several days after research by Sainsbury's Car Insurance claimed that two-thirds of the UK's motorists have admitted to "potentially dangerous behaviour".
