The government has revealed that John Hayes, a Tory MP, will replace Charles Hendry as Energy Minister.

Part of the government's ongoing reshuffle, the appointment has raised concern amongst some green energy suppliers, as well as amongst those within the renewable energy sector. Hayes, MP for South Holland and the Deepings, has previously shown a dislike for wind turbines, stating that they were a "terrible intrusion on our flat fenland landscape."

In 2009 he also told the BBC that "renewable energy needs to pass the twin tests of environmental and economic sustainability and wind power fails on both counts."

A well-respected figure within the energy industry, Hendry's departure has been met with disappointment and shock.

In a tweet, Jennifer Webber, of RenewableUK, stated: "now's not the time to get rid of someone with such as superb understanding of energy policy."

Doug Parr, Greenpeace UK's chief scientist and policy director, hinted that the decision to replace Hendry could affect the government, at a time when it is working on drawing up a final nuclear power plant policy framework.
