People should log on to the internet and compare electricity prices via a comparison site such as UK Power if they wish to benefit from the most favourable tariff.
That is the view of Mark Todd, director at energyhelpline.com, who says the method provides the "best way" to find cheap energy power bills.
He advises people to spend time searching for the best prices and to compare deals on offer from various suppliers before making a switch of energy provider.
Mr Todd states: "The cheapest deals are generally internet deals and they are not the fixed deals, they are the variable rate deals."
Households may find the use of a comparison site can help them to cut a significant portion off their home fuel budget.
Another way to save cash on energy payments is to add insulation to a home, although thinkinsulation.com recently announced 80 per cent of homeowners have made no improvements in this area over the last three years.
