British households need to take a closer look at exactly where and when they spend their cash – something comparing electricity online may be able to help with.
A spokeswoman for Aviva says tighter financial control can help the poorest and most vulnerable people out of their perilous situation.
"One of the simplest but most effective ways families can help themselves is to take a step back and look at where their money is actually going," she states.
Comparing electricity online could be considered to be the perfect place to start, as the use of a portal such as UK Power should be able to tell a consumer if they are paying too much for their home's fuel within minutes.
The representative admits it is always tempting for Britons to "stick their heads in the sand", but looking at finances can be a worthwhile exercise.
Such advice may be especially relevant at the moment, with all but one of the UK's major dual fuel providers recently announcing price hikes.
