Construction firms have claimed that legislation forcing them to improve energy efficiency and reduce customers' electricity and gas bills could result in house prices going up by ten per cent.

The sector said that new rules, which will affect conservatory builds and housing extensions, will push up the cost of housing, negating the benefits from reduced energy bills.

Stephen Giles, managing director of ConservatoryQuoteOnline.com, said: "The only logical conclusion is that by adding further costs the conservatory market will suffer, putting a strain on suppliers and the building industry."

The increased cost of construction could be offset if electricity and gas savings were substantial enough.

As well as addressing the issue of housing extensions, the government is planning to retrofit every home in the UK with energy saving measures in the coming years.

It has pledged to fit energy saving devices such as solar panels and improve insulation in seven million homes by 2020.
