Consumers in the UK have been told not to accept the increased cost of car insurance premiums for their providers, according to an expert.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive of the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA), has said that motorists should shop around and find a more competitive deal.

He went on to suggest that people should reconsider their premiums every year.

"You might have hit a certain age or your car might be one year older, which gets you an extra discount, or you might have moved house," the expert explained.

"You could have reached the age of 40 and these things change the premiums so every year get your broker to look around the market and come back to you with the best deal."

Recent research by found that 28 per cent of drivers stay with their insurer when asked to pay more on premiums, while 30 per cent said they would change their provider.
