Although weather conditions are set to become much colder in the next month or so, a new study has revealed that consumers will avoid turning on the heating because of the recent price increase implemented by the so-called "Big Six" energy suppliers.

The YouGov poll that was commissioned by Anglian Home Improvements revealed that one in five respondents wanted to save money on heating bills, and would substitute the warmth provided by heating with warmer clothes to beat any potential big chill.

Just over half of those surveyed also revealed that they were likely to delay turning their heating on this winter because of the rising costs of electricity and gas.

Further research has also provided for bleak reading; carried out by uSwitch, a study has also displayed that around 28 per cent of households in the UK are struggling to reach the financial demands of combined energy bills following tariff raises by all of the "Big Six" firms.

Head of consumer policy at uSwitch, Ann Robinson, stated: "We are now just 14 per cent away from hitting an affordability ceiling after which customers will start rationing their usage as though they are living in the third world."

Painting a stark picture of the situation faced by many families, Robinson continued, finishing: "The facts speak for themselves; almost seven million households living in fuel poverty, a third... saying energy is already unaffordable... and a quarter struggling to pay their bills."
