Deal 'could affect energy competition'

Between 1 July 2019 and 31 December 2019, at least 10% of people who switched energy supplier for both gas & electricity with Uswitch saved £479 or more.

The proposed deal for EDF to buy British Energy could have an impact on competition in the gas and electricity sector, according to a major body.

Energywatch has claimed that the potential deal will put "more power in the hands" of the UK's largest energy companies and could also affect the cost of power.

As a result, the organisation has claimed that any consequences for consumers should be identified to ensure the interests of consumers are protected.

"The issue of concern for energywatch is not that EDF is French or that they plan to build nuclear power stations," the body explained.

"Security of supply issues and the competition issues must both be covered if we are to ensure that consumers are to be beneficiaries from the deal."

Recent research by energywatch claimed that consumers may decide to self-disconnect or go into debt in order to meet the rising cost of gas and electricity.

It was also revealed that several families may choose to go without food in order to keep themselves warm in the coming months.
