Plans for a power station which could provide renewable energy by burning vegetable oil, plant oil and animal fat have been revealed.

Edgeley Green Power - one of the UK's many green energy suppliers - has submitted plans for the £20 million plant.

Located in Shoreham, West Sussex, if approved the plant could provide enough electricity to run around 18,000 homes; it has also been revealed that the station could be up and running by 2014. The materials used by Edgeley will be those considered not to be fit for human consumption and will all have undergone an independent audit to ensure they meet government sustainability criteria.

Mike Reynolds, chief executive at the firm, stated: "Our planning application has been submitted later than anticipated because we had been awaiting the outcome of the Government's recent review of bio fuels for renewable power generation, which was not completed until the end of last year.

"Shoreham port is still the ideal location for us because we can bring all our fuel in by sea directly to site, meaning we can take full advantage of the port's facilities and not impact on road traffic," Mr Reynolds added.
