Energy UK YouTube video looks to bust switching energy provider myths
A new report has claimed UK energy consumers are put off by myths surrounding changing energy tariffs - in spite of the huge savings of up to £300 it can potentially generate.
The study from Energy UK has been released to coincide with a new YouTube video from the trade association called Simple to Switch, aimed at busting such misconceptions.
The study found over half (59%) of customers believed they could not switch provider if they owed money to their current provider, this is despite the fact consumers are actually able to swap, as long as they have debts of less than £500 per fuel.
The survey also revealed 16% of people thought a new supplier would need access to their home in order for them to switch. A further seven per cent of individuals thought the switch would involve digging up their garden.
However, an overwhelming majority of 79% admitted they would switch tariff in order to save money.
Energy UK chief executive, Angela Knight, said: "Most people would consider switching energy supplier but there's still too many myths getting in the way.
"The energy industry has already reduced and simplified the number of tariffs, and made it easier to compare and switch to the best deal."
The Government has also looked to help customers combat high energy bills with its Green Deal initiative.
The scheme aims to provide energy consumers with a loan, payable via their bills on a rate based around the total money saved, to invest in things such as a replacement boiler or wall insulation to improve energy efficiency, designed to cut energy bills in the long-term.
