Comparing electricity and gas prices on the internet is one of the easiest ways to ensure the most favourable tariff this winter.
A spokeswoman for National Energy Action urges people to spend some time looking for the best deal in order to lower their bills as the coldest months approach.
In addition to such a tactic, the expert adds there are several other ways to cut back on what a household is asked to fork out for their heat and light.
For example, the representative says setting up an online Direct Debit with a cheap dual fuel provider will typically save about £150 each year.
She goes on to note: "Households on certain benefits will be able to search for a social tariff which ensures that the supplier is providing their energy at their lowest rate."
Research by consumer website Which? recently found that one man could save approximately £400 just by moving to his supplier's cheapest tariff.
