Trewin Restorack, chief executive officer of Global Action Plan, said individuals can reduce their impact on the natural environment by making simple changes to their eating choices.
The expert noted families that grow their own produce will not only reduce their shopping bill, but also decrease their 'food miles'.
"You tend to eat what you grow and know what pesticides you're putting on it, so it definitely has environmental benefits," he explained.
Mr Restorack added the practice can result in people throwing away less food, which will mean the amount of methane produced will also decrease.
The recommendation comes after director of communications at National Energy Action Maria Wardrobe suggested behavioural changes - such as switching off appliances at the wall and turning off lights - can help make a home more energy efficient.
