Homeowners in the UK should re-assess their home insurance cover after major home renovations, according to the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA).

The body's technical services officer, Steve Foulsham, said that many renovations can be regarded as part of the building when installed, meaning they may not be covered under contents policies.

He added that it may be sensible for a homeowner to increase their insurance if renovations prove to be expensive.

"Depending on what you're doing and the size of the project, you may need to reassess the value of your contents and/or buildings [cover], to take account of that," he explained.

"If it's an expensive, state of the art new kitchen worth £10,000, then you may wish to increase your sum insured to cater for that."

Established in 1977, BIBA is the UK's leading general insurance organisation and represents the interests of brokers and intermediaries in the industry.

The body also provides training, technical and regulatory advice to consumer bodies on a number of issues.
