According to new research, many Britons are wasting money by failing to check their home insurance policies and buying separate insurance for new possessions.

Insurer esure has said that almost a quarter (23 per cent) of people buy separate insurance to protect valuable new items such as jewellery and mobile phones from loss, theft or damage.

However, this means that over 3.3 million adults could be paying out twice as they already have personal possessions cover included in their home insurance.

Mike Pickard from esure home insurance said: "It's crucial to know what your home insurance covers before you hit the shops to avoid wasting money on unnecessary policies.

"Doubling up on insurance is the same as throwing your money away."

According to esure, people should be aware that many shop assistants will be on commission for selling insurance policies, and should avoid paying out twice, even if the additional insurance is only a small percentage of the item's price.

Meanwhile, research has shown that the average amount of disposable income has fallen by nearly 30 per cent in two years.

The Abbey survey suggested that one in ten people now have only ten per cent of their total income available for spending on items other than essentials such as rent, mortgages and food.
