Homeowners have been urged to check how they can avoid storm damage to their properties by giving them 'a storm MOT'.

Insurer esure has said that the greatest risks are from falling trees, falling masonry and dislodged roof tiles, which can lead to water damage in homes and injury to passers-by.

Head of risk and underwriting at esure home insurance Mike Pickard said: "With the weather seemingly breaking new records every year, we would urge every homeowner in the UK to take steps to prevent storm damage right now."

Mr Pickard added that although home insurance would help those who have suffered storm damage, prevention is better than cure.

The insurer advises homeowners to check roof tiles are secure, remove rotten or loose tree branches and keep drains clear to allow water to escape.

Meanwhile, research from Allianz shows that three-quarters of people feel they are more likely to be burgled or have their property vandalised due to the credit crunch, the Independent reports.

However, 56 per cent of residents admitted they did not have security lights outside and almost half said they do not have adequate door or window locks.
