Hull has been named the most energy efficient city in the UK, according to new research by British Gas.

The energy supplier's latest research also found that Newcastle and Glasgow were efficient with their gas and electricity usage, while London, Nottingham and Derby were found to be the least efficient places.

Discussing the findings, which were based on 1.5 million energy saver report audits, Matthew Lockwood, senior research fellow for Climate Change at the Institute for Public Policy research said: "Industry and Government must learn how to encourage all of us to become more energy efficient in our existing homes.

"While building legislation has a role, making really big cuts in household emissions means unleashing people's imagination and motivation."

The results of the survey were announced at the launch of British Gas's new initiative to demonstrate how people can reduce their carbon footprint.

Green Streets has been organised as a year-long experiment to discover how households can make changes to their energy usage and homes to embrace greener living.
