There has been "little change" in the cost of the home insurance premiums in the UK at the start of this year, according to new figures.

AA's insurance index found that the average quote for buildings cover fell by 42 pence, while contents rose by one per cent to £129.

The study also found that combined buildings and contents insurance premiums decreased by around £4 to £293.

Andrew Strong, the chief executive officer of AA Insurance, said that the fall in buildings cover could be explained by a rise in the number of risks not being quoted by some insurers.

However, he added that this did not necessarily mean that homes were becoming uninsurable.

"It is more likely that insurers will want to know more - for example what flood protection measures are being taken by local authorities - before quoting," he explained.

The British Insurance Brokers Association recently described home insurance as a "social responsibility", adding that it is important for people to cover the contents of their property.
