Homeowners in London may wish to compare electricity prices when they see the results of a new scheme introduced in the city, which will turn their rubbish into renewable energy.

A loan of £4 million has been given to Orchid Environmental in order to help pay for the construction of a new waste-to-energy facility in the Bexley region.

Mayor Boris Johnson called the project "a fantastic example of the green economy in action" and it has been predicted that up to 160,000 tonnes of waste will be converted into a variety of secondary recovered fuels by 2013.

The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment noted that one of the processes in achieving this is to apply controlled heat to trash in order to both collect energy given off and reduce the actual amount of products needing to be sent to a landfill.

It is hoped that the output of the Bexley plant will cut carbon emissions by over 38,000 tonnes per year.
