Business energy consumers have been urged by Richard Branson to consider how their usage could be changed to reduce carbon emissions.
Writing for Live Mint, the enterprise mogul said the actions of private firms have been some of the contributing factors to the problem of global warming, adding that the industry "must also be a part of the solution".
He further explained that the majority of new technologies designed to improve efficiency will be created by entrepreneurs and local schemes designed to reduce carbons at a community level "tend to punch well above their weight".
Last week, the Renewable Energy Foundation released figures showing that the UK missed its 2010 target for renewable electricity. It was expected that the source would make up ten per cent of the national usage but the final figure came to 6.5 per cent.
The organisation observed that the numbers cast doubt on Britain's ability to meet EU standards by 2020, where a benchmark of 15 per cent has been set.
