More than 2.5 million households were damaged by children last year, according to a study by Abbey Insurance.

The research also found that adults collectively spend over £552 million repairing damage caused by youngsters, with those between one and five years old most likely to cause problems.

Damage to paintwork or wallpaper was also found to be the most common problem caused by children.

Tony Beckwith, head of Santander Insurance UK, warned that such damage can cause "unwanted tension" if homeowners do not have the correct cover.

He said: "We would urge anyone looking after children this summer to try and avoid this by ensuring they have the proper cover on their home insurance, including any additional full accidental damage options required on their policies."

The AA's public relations manager, Ian Crowder, recently claimed that extending a home insurance policy so it covers belongings taken on holiday is "a good idea".

He said that while there are limits to some of the policies on offer, it can have benefits for those travelling abroad regularly.
