Most people are cutting back on luxury perfume purchases in the next six months, according to a recent survey.

Seventy-two per cent said they were planning to spend less than usual on fragrances.

However, the research from Sheila's Wheels shows women spend around £2,835 on perfume in a lifetime, with a further £900 on perfume for their partners.

Men admit to spending around £2,000 on fragrances for their partners but only £1,683 on themselves.

The survey found that a cheeky four per cent admitted that like Marilyn Monroe, perfume is all they wear in bed.

Jacky Brown from the insurance company said that the UK was undoubtedly a nation of perfume lovers.

She added: "Fragrances are expensive luxury items and their combined value should not be underestimated when it comes to arranging contents insurance.

"They are small items but their price tags certainly aren't – so don't overlook perfumes and cosmetics when thinking about the value of what's in our wardrobes."

Meanwhile, credit card spending is set to fall this year as more consumers opt to use debit cards to minimise debt, according to market analyst Datamonitor.

The Press Association reports that it is estimated that only 20 per cent of transactions will be made with credit cards.
