The royal wedding has been and gone but figures reported by one energy comparison site has stated that demand for cheap electricity went up over the bank holiday weekend as millions of people tuned in to watch Prince William and Kate tie the knot.

According to the statistics released by the National Grid, there was a large surge of 2,400 MW at around the same time that the couple arrived at Buckingham Palace.

Actual statistics have realised that this is the fourth largest massive increase in demand ever seen for a TV programme of all time.

John Carnwath, power system manager at National Grid, commented: "It's been a fascinating day to work in our control room, seeing the huge impact on electricity demand of millions of people across Britain being brought together by William and Kate's wedding.

"We're proud of the role we have played in helping the nation share their big day," he added.

The royal wedding attracted millions of viewers from all over the world, which in-turn would have had a massive impact on the electricity consumption.
