Californian governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will give a keynote speech at this year's Conservative party conference, it has been revealed.

Formerly the star of the Terminator films and a bodybuilder, Mr Schwarzenegger will be the guest of honour at the party conference due to be held in the seaside town Blackpool in September.

"I am delighted that Governor Schwarzenegger has accepted my invitation to address our party conference this year," Tory party leader David Cameron announced today.

The actor turned politician is expected to address the conference regarding environmental issues. Last September California became the first US state to impose a cap on the emission of carbon dioxide and other gases and has since called for other states to follow suit.

Praising the Republican's success in his state, Mr Cameron added: "Governor Schwarzenegger led a dramatic revival of his party's fortunes in California and as governor he has shown tremendous leadership -above all in pioneering measures to protect the environment, reaching out to political opponents in doing so.

"It's great he's coming to our party conference, and I very much look forward to welcoming him there."

Mr Schwarzenegger has already met with prime minister Tony Blair when the pair signed a mission statement promising to "commit to urgent action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote low carbon technologies".

The Austrian-born politician also joked that he would offer Mr Blair a role in Terminator after he steps down from office this year.
