Smoking can double the premium costs of those looking for life insurance, according to an expert.

Kieran Platt, the director of provider Life Direct, has stated that the difference that smoking can make to such a policy depends on how old and person is, but added that it can "massively affect" a premium.

The expert also went on to explain that other issues such as pregnancy should not necessarily affect the cost of such cover.

"If people are pregnant that doesn't affect premiums in itself, unless they are suffering from complications," he explained.

"An insurance company would look at the pre-pregnancy weight rather than the mid-pregnancy weight, so pregnancy doesn’t matter [to life insurance premiums]."

Research released by Norwich Union in March found that 37 per cent of people have not through about taking out life insurance.

The study also found that 44 per cent of people decided to purchase life insurance after they bought their first home, while 13 per cent bought cover after getting married or moving in with a partner.
