The average student bedroom in the UK contains over £700-worth of electrical gadgets, according to new research.

M&S Money's study also found that mp3 players, laptops and DVD players are the most likely devices to be kept in the rooms, as well as TVs, digital cameras and stereo systems.

Nearly £500-worth of clothing is also owned by the average student, as well as over £200-worth of text books.

Steve Price, M&S's head of general insurance, suggested that the findings show the need for students to be insured.

"Many students would be surprised to know that their valuables may already be covered - they just need to check whether their parents' home insurance policy covers their property when away from home," he added.

Recent research by Sainsbury's found that a third of home insurance policies cap cover for those living away from a property at £3,750 or less.

It was also revealed that only 11 policies in the UK provide cover of up to £1,000.
