The creation of a European supergrid akin to the UK's existing National Grid could substantially reduce electricity prices for British consumers, it has been claimed.

According to members of the Claverton Energy Group, embarking on the international energy project would ensure Britain had a secure and sustainable electricity supply within 30 years.

The 250-strong group of independent energy experts has called on the government to intervene and avoid an unregulated energy market in the future.

Claverton spokesperson, Dave Andrews, says: "We only have to look back at the construction of the UK National Grid.

"This resulted in a dramatic reduction in the cost of power, because in total far less spinning reserve was required."

He added that the big six energy firms were not supportive of a European-wide supergrid because it could result in cheaper electricity and less profit.

The Liberal Democrats have long called for simpler billing information for consumers so they know exactly what they are paying for.
