Alex Randall, spokesman for the Centre for Alternative Technology, explained the obvious solution is for companies to invest in eco-friendly energy production and use.
However, he added: "Whether the market alone will produce enough development of renewables is debatable."
Although Mr Randall noted businesses should not let the industry settle when it comes to advances in this area, some may see a switch of energy provider as a more effective short-term way to cut invoices.
Comparing electricity prices online may be the best way to see what various providers offer and sealing a deal for the one that most suits a particular firm.
Mark Todd, director at energyhelpline.com, recently said the help of a comparison site is crucial in securing the most favourable power tariff.
