Hundreds of thousands of people, many of whom could save money by making a switch of energy supplier, are missing out on another opportunity to reduce their home power bills.
Home Heat Helpline says some 484,700 households across the UK are not opting to take free assistance with invoices from energy providers.
It is thought the aid refers to reduced tariffs for some people as well as insulation on offer from power companies but not being taken up.
Just 12 per cent of people have phoned the helpline, despite its ability to create annual savings of up to £260.
Christine McGourty, spokesperson for the Home Heat Helpline, says: "Free help is available to people struggling to keep warm this winter, but too many are failing to claim because they don't think the help on offer is meant for them.
However, Britons were praised for their actions recently by Nigel Berman, founder of nigelsecostore.com, who said individuals are largely prepared to pay for energy-saving products.
