Switch of energy supplier may be saving grace for indebted Britons

Between 1 July 2019 and 31 December 2019, at least 10% of people who switched energy supplier for both gas & electricity with Uswitch saved £479 or more.

There are many people in the UK struggling to meet repayments on their debts, some of whom could be helped significantly by a switch of energy supplier.

David Rodger, managing director at the Debt Advice Foundation, explains a worrying number of people are now avoiding paying up essential bills – such as those made to dual fuel providers – in order to deal with borrowings.

He highlights store cards and credit cards, both of which can have high interest rates attached, as being priorities for many consumers.

As such, the latest energy bill or tax invoice can occasionally be put to the bottom of the pile.

"It's the reality of spending that often hits in January when the bills begin to arrive. Worse still is that families may go without basic essentials, or avoid paying priority bills," states Mr Rodger.

Recent research by MyVoucherCodes.co.uk found January is the pinnacle of borrowing during the year, with 26 per cent of people who rely on lenders doing so in the month.
