Motorists in the UK are wasting a total of £1.9 billion on car insurance premiums by not shopping around for the best deals, according to swiftcover.com.
The online insurance provider revealed the statistic as it provided a range of tips for people looking to review their cover in the next few weeks.
Among its suggestions, the company has urged drivers to ensure they do not pay for policy features that they do not need, as well as revealing that providers may offer discounts on cars which have alarms or immobilisers fitted.
Tina Shortle, swiftcover.com's marketing director, said that with household bills rising, it was "crazy" that people would spend over the odds on car cover.
She added: "Smart consumers know that an online insurance company is likely to be cheaper because it doesn't have to pay hundreds of call centre staff and can pass on the savings to its customers."
Recent research by Sainsbury's found that the cost of car insurance premiums has risen by over five per cent in the past year.
