SSE is set to spend £2.5 million on silencing the noise created by its new sub-station in the Scottish Highlands.

The Wester Balblair sub-station was constructed to feed the electricity generated by local renewable energy projects into the National Grid. However, local residents complained it created a constant buzzing noise - which they dubbed the 'beauty buzz.'

Environmental health officers from the Highland Council carried out an investigation into the complaints earlier this year (2014), and discovered that a "statutory nuisance" was present. As a result it issued an abatement notice, ordering the big sixenergy supplier to resolve the issue.

SSE will surround the six circular reactors at the station with specially manufactured acoustic jackets. The jackets are expected to be fitted by October. In addition, the supplier will also surround the other reactors at the site with large sound barriers.

Commenting on the issue, SSE's transmissions director, David Gardner, stated: "It takes time to find solutions because of the complex nature of the problem, but we are taking this very seriously.

"I do not want to be in this position again.

"It is difficult for me to have to try to manage and is certainly not good for our reputation," Mr Gardner concluded.
